President-elect Donald Trump might be invited to meet the Queen soon, say No 10 officials. Such a state visit might improve our post-Brexit prospects.

President Ronald Reagan had been in office for nearly 18 months before coming here on a state visit in 1982. 

His successor George H W Bush never had a state visit. Bill Clinton had one in December 1995 – almost three years after he took office.

George W Bush had one in 2003 – again, almost three years after taking office. Elected in 2008, Barack Obama’s state visit was in 2011.
